Domaine de la Calmette
Cahors, France

In 2015, Maya Sallée and Nicolas Fernandez settled in Trespoux-Rassiels above Cahors on the “Causses” plateau known for its limestone soil.

These terroirs at high altitudes of the AOC Cahors are fabulous, they combine Chablisien kimmeridgian from where the vines draw their great minerality and red clays that bring texture to the wine. The young couple have worked biodynamically since the beginning to promote the life of the soil, with their one hectare which has became seven today.

Long gone are the days of ancient history when the “black wine” was used to color the Bordeaux wines which were too pale. La Calmette is part of this new wave of Cahors which are fresh, digestible and with a “high degree of drinkability”. Malbec and Merlot are vinified as naturally as possible, without additives, and only a little sulfur. The natural sparkling ''Nytaclope'' made with malbec is similar in style to the Italian artisanal Lambrusco and has helped to put La Calmette on the map.

Their hard work has paid off, as La Calmette was elected ""Winegrowers and Terroir of the Future"" in 2017 by a jury of professionals in the wine sector.
