Veronica Ortega
Castile and León, Spain

Veronica Ortega holds an impressive track record. She has worked in areas such as Clos Erasmus, Álvaro Palacios, Domaine Comte Armand, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Domaine Combier and Raul Perez.

In 2010, she moved to the Bierzo appellation in the region of Castilla y León, where she began producing her own wines. Initially, she vinified in the cellar of Raul Perez, to finally acquire her own facilities in 2014. Having learned organic and biodynamic cultivation of the vine, she naturally applies the same methods to her own vines (aged an average of 80 years) and harvests everything manually.

In Bierzo, mencia is the main grape variety used to make red wine. Veronica considers that this variety is the “pinot noir” of Spain, which is why the search for finesse and elegance remains her priority. Thus, she manages to obtain wines of a delicacy comparable to Burgundy and a complexity often found in the northern Rhone wines. No oenological products are used in the cellar, except for a tiny amount of sulfur during bottling.

The project is still young and although Véronica produces few cuvées, new wines will gradually appear. She is a rising winegrower with a bright future.
