Mouzon Leroux
Champagne, France

The Mouzon family has been settled in the village of Verzy for six generations. Mouzon Leroux is also the name for their “Grand Cru” of Montagne de Reims. Only 17 of the 319 villages that include Champagne are considered worthy to bear the Grand Cru appellation thanks to a particular climate, soil, subsoil and an exceptional terrain. Located in the south-east of Reims, the village is the most visited destination of Champagne. Its forest is home to a unique place, where there are twisted Beech trees, a unique species called a “Faux de Verzy”.

Within a radius of 10 kilometers around the winery, 10 hectares of vines are cultivated on about thirty parcels spread over four terroirs: 8 hectares in Verzy and the rest spreading over the communes of Verzenay, Ludes and Villers-Marmery.

The soils are clay-limestone and the seven grape varieties used are: Arbanne, Petit Meslier, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

In the vineyards, biodynamic agriculture is practised by conviction and to ensure the healthiness of the soil. For the younger vines, an animal led plow is used to prevent soil compaction. During the harvests, the perfectly ripened grapes are hand picked to ensure the best juice possible.

In order to keep the identity of the grapes, all of the winemaking processes are done naturally. Indigenous yeasts are used for fermentation and the wines are aged on lees, in casks or vats, to bring forth complexity. At the blending stage, priority is given to achieving a unique character for each vintage. After bottling, the wines are aged from 24 months to 6 years in the cellar according to the specific vintage and each of them expresses the initial balance born from the terroir.

The consistency of quality and the continuity of the Mouzon taste is the final result.
